Launching Yelken - A Cloud Platform
F. Mustafa Kurt
Yelken is launching its cloud platform to provide a user-friendly experience for both developers and non-developers.
After investing significant development effort, I am happy to announce that we are launching Yelken Cloud, a Platform as a Service (PaaS) for our users. On Yelken Cloud, you can create websites with your favorite web applications or build complex solutions powered by your containerized workloads, without maintaining the infrastructure.
Setting up infrastructure to run an application on the cloud requires attention to details, including but not limited to finding an appropriate cloud provider, creating a Virtual Private Server (VPS) with reasonable resources, deciding on an Operating System (OS), setting up necessary tools, installing your application, and configuring networking to access your application over the internet. To set up a simple application in the cloud, there are many steps to follow. This obviously gets worse as you deploy more applications to the cloud and start updating them regularly. The much worse part is maintaining the infrastructure, which includes regularly updating software to stay clear of vulnerabilities and receive bug fixes.
This is where PaaS providers really shine and save you from spending a lot of time. They take the hassles of setting up and maintaining infrastructure. They also create a Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipeline for your application that starts with building it from the moment you push changes to your git repository and deploying it to a test environment. These features make developing cloud-based applications a breeze for both individuals and teams.
As you can imagine, Yelken is not the first or the last of its kind. There are already nice and advanced platforms such as Vercel, Heroku, Railway, and Render, as well as many new ones that are coming up as time goes on. Yelken, with its own similarities and differences, is an alternative to the aforementioned platforms, though not a complete replacement for the moment. Having alternative solutions is good for the users.
To simply answer the question “Why do we build Yelken?”, it is because we want to have a platform that provides managed web applications like WordPress for non-developer users to create a website, and also enables developers to build complex solutions by making use of primitive compute, network, and storage resources easily. While Yelken, in its current state, allows users to create websites and run containers easily, it still has many features on its roadmap to become an all-in-one solution for cloud deployments. Those missing pieces will be implemented as development continues and Yelken gets battle-tested.
